Demo Guide

Square Enix opened a free demo of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World on September 9, 2026 across the same platforms as the full game: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and the Microsoft Store. The slice runs from the start of the story through the conclusion of events in Witherwood. That is long enough to scout, fight, and see synthesis, and short enough that every slot still matters.

This is not a “keep your save and continue” demo. Steam’s listing is specific, and those rules should drive how you play.

What you can do in the demo

You recruit, raise, and synthesize inside the Witherwood opening. Rank limits are strict: only rank G and rank F monsters can be befriended here. Higher ranks can appear as threats or as later-game preview saves at press events, but they are not your keepers. Treat every scout as a family sample, not a trophy.

The personality quiz still assigns a starter. Getting Started explains why rerolling is reasonable. Bianca vs Nera still matters because scout affinity and Wrangler’s Spirit do not wait for the full campaign.

You will see Roots of Creation, day and night, and the cylindrical overworld Nintendo Life compared to Animal Crossing. The Waterwing Can is the tool that turns those roots into heal and Zoom points. Learn the sprinkle timing on overworld packs; DualShockers noted that a well-timed spray can scare monsters into dropping an item instead of fighting.

Transfer rules (read twice)

  • You may transfer up to eight monsters from your main party and reserves.
  • Transfer only works if you play the demo and the full game on the same platform, with the same account.
  • To claim demo bonuses in the full game, choose Start New Game from the title screen.
  • Transferred monsters appear in the depot after you unlock it. They begin at level 1 with default talents.
  • Items, gold, and other demo inventory do not move.
  • Purchase bonuses cannot be claimed inside the demo.

That level-1 reset is the sentence people skip. A level 20 synthesis child is still a level 1 child in December. The value you keep is the species, the family, and any unique recipe you would rather not hunt again. Plus Value grinding in September is mostly practice.

Wrangler’s Bundle

Playing the demo grants an item set for the full game:

  • Ring of Impulse x1
  • Bonus Ball x1
  • Smoked Sirloin x5

Those items land with the full campaign, not inside the demo. Smoked Sirloin is a scout meat; the Bonus Ball is the kind of extra roll you save for a family you still lack. Do not plan a demo economy around them.

How to spend eight slots

  1. Keep one monster from each family you can actually scout with your wrangler. Bianca should not waste three slots on extra slimes if Nera would have farmed those later.
  2. Prefer unique children from special recipes over two generic G-rank parents you can scout again in five minutes.
  3. Skip metal-farming fantasies. The Metallic Ring is paid DLC and is not a demo toy.
  4. Leave at least one slot flexible until the last session. You will meet a joke monster you actually want — Nintendo Life’s Piña Marauder crowd is real.
  5. Screenshot your party before you uninstall. Depot retrieval is easy; remembering which slime flavor you liked is not.

What the demo is for

Use it to answer three questions before you spend $59.99 or $94.99:

  • Do you like commanding a party more than being the party?
  • Does synthesis feel like a fun kitchen or a spreadsheet you resent?
  • Which wrangler still feels good after the first dungeon?

If the answer to all three is yes, read editions before January 5, 2027 so the Adventure Starter Set is not left on the table. If the answer is no, you just spent a free evening instead of a Deluxe pre-purchase.

For the wider systems the demo only samples, return to the Guides Hub, then check the early party page so your eight keepers have jobs instead of just names.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you scout your first monster.

Which ranks can I scout in the demo?

Only rank G and rank F. Higher ranks are a full-game problem. Build family coverage instead of chasing X-rank rumors.

Do demo monsters keep their levels?

No. They arrive in the full-game depot at level 1 with default talents. Species and family are what you keep.

Can I claim Deluxe bonuses in the demo?

No. Steam states bonus content cannot be claimed in the demo. Start New Game in the full campaign to receive the Wrangler's Bundle from demo play.
