Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is a Dragon Quest V side story dressed as a monster RPG. The protagonists are child versions of Bianca Whitaker and Nera Briscoletti. Their fathers are ill. The Leaves of Life are supposed to grow in the Kingdom of Witherwood. The leaves are almost gone. That is the entire pitch, and it is enough to make wrangler choice feel like a story choice instead of a difficulty slider.
This hub splits the cast into two pages. Bianca vs Nera is the mechanical page: Spirit, scout affinity, when you can switch. Companions and villains is everyone else: Fluffy, Debora, Fizzy, Scruffy, King Withers, Thespidor, and the Archeagles’ absence.
Why the cast belongs on a “players” hub
You do not play as a silent custom hero. You play as one of two named girls with different kits. Preview players at Gamescom started with a personality quiz and a locked wrangler for the opening. That is closer to picking a character in a fighting game than picking a difficulty. If you skip this hub and jump to guides, you will still finish Witherwood — you will just scout the wrong families for ten hours.
Japanese materials title the game as Dragon Quest Monsters 4: Bianca and Nera in the Land of Withered Trees. English keeps The Withered World. Debora (Deborah in some store copy) is in the trailer and the Collector’s figurine set even though she is not a wrangler. Fans of V already know the triangle; this game is interested in the childhood version of it.
