How to Scout Monsters

Scouting is how Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World turns a random encounter into a teammate. You do not throw a sealed ball and hope. You fight, you spend a Show of Force, and the game shows a percentage. That honesty is the whole system: raise the number, accept the miss, and do not get greedy when the pack is about to lock you out.

Square Enix’s July 2026 briefing is the backbone of this page. Over 500 monsters sit in eight families. Each has a rank from G to X, a size of S or L, and a personality that steers stat growth. You meet them in the field and in dungeons. Befriending starts in battle.

Show of Force, step by step

  1. Weaken the target. Low HP helps. Preview players also mentioned debuffs as extra pressure.
  2. Keep a full-looking party. GamerEscape and GameRant both noted that more monsters on your team raise the scout chance. Empty benches are a tax.
  3. Choose Show of Force (the official name for the scout command).
  4. Read the percentage. If it is a joke number, feed meat or spend another turn softening.
  5. If you fail, stop. There is a chance the enemy side gets angry and refuses another scout in that battle. Running to reset is cheaper than a wipe.

Meat items exist specifically for this loop. Digital versions of the full game include a Hearty Meat Set: Monster Munchies, Smoked Sirloins, and Meaty Treats. The Adventure Starter Set adds more Munchies plus Bonus Balls and Seeds of Skill if you buy before January 5, 2027. The demo cannot claim those bonuses, but the demo Wrangler’s Bundle still sends Smoked Sirloin x5 into the full campaign.

Scout Run is a separate full-game feature. Square Enix has not published a complete field guide for it, but the Scout Run VIP Card DLC is explicit: extra scouty snacks, more spawns, shorter wait between uses. Do not spend demo time pretending that card exists yet.

Wrangler affinity is not flavor text

Bianca scouts beasts, dragons, and the undead more easily. Nera scouts slimes, nature, and material monsters more easily. If your box is all slimes on Bianca, you are fighting the kit. Swap wrangler in the full game when the story allows, or build the missing families through synthesis instead of brute-force scouting.

Personalities still matter after the catch. They bias how a monster grows, which is why two G-rank slimes are not interchangeable parents. Keep notes on traits you actually like; Plus Value later cares about the talent work you did, not the nickname.

Size, rank, and when to skip

Large monsters look like the prize. They occupy two party slots, hold extra traits, and can act more than once. They also cut the number of bodies you bring, which can lower scout odds for the next target. Early on, scout small monsters first, then decide whether an L-rank is worth the slot tax. The families page and early party lists are built around that trade.

The demo only allows G and F recruits. Seeing a high-rank aura enemy in the overworld is a look, not an invitation. Those swirling-aura threats are for later. Walk around them until you have a Waterwing Can rest site and a bench that can eat a wipe.

Day and night change who appears. Square Enix showed tropical beaches, vegetable plains, swamps that never stop raining, and sunken ships. If a family is missing from your box, change the clock before you burn meat.

Scout checklist for a new wrangler

  • Fill eight slots with different families before you duplicate a cute slime.
  • Use meat when the percentage is close, not when it is 8%.
  • Abort after a failed Show of Force if the enemies look furious.
  • Save Bonus Balls for a family your wrangler is bad at.
  • After level 10, stop scouting copies you could synthesize instead.

Scouting feeds everything else on this wiki. Battles need bodies. Synthesis needs parents. The tier list is useless if your box is four of the same rank-G slime. Scout wide, then get picky.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you scout your first monster.

What is Show of Force?

The in-battle scout command. Weaken the target, spend the action, and read a percentage based on party strength and wrangler affinity.

Do meat items guarantee a catch?

No. They push the percentage. Hearty Meat Set pieces and demo Smoked Sirloins are for close rolls, not miracles.

Why did the enemy refuse a second scout?

A failed Show of Force can anger the pack and block another attempt in that fight. Leave, heal at a Root of Creation, and try a fresh encounter.
