Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World Early Party Picks

Four jobs, eight slots, and no X-rank fantasies.

Early Party Picks

Your first party in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is a demo party whether you like it or not. Rank G and F only. Eight slots. Transfers reset to level 1. That sounds harsh; it is actually clarifying. You are drafting jobs, not a forever team.

The four-job front line

Keep four active monsters with four distinct jobs:

  1. Staple attacker — a small physical or spell user who does not need two slots. This is the Fight-button monster.
  2. Secondary attacker / breaker — something that hits a different family so you are not walled by one resist.
  3. Sustain — heal, buff, or status clear. Nera’s Spirit already helps here; you still want a monster that can do it on other turns.
  4. Flex — scout battery, extra body for Show of Force math, or a unique child you refuse to delete.

Reserves copy those jobs rather than adding a fifth philosophy. If all four bench slots are “cute,” you will learn that the hard way in the first dungeon.

Draft around the wrangler

Bianca should fill beasts, dragons, and undead first because that is where her scout odds live. Her Spirit covers HP and attack, so the sustain monster can be lighter.

Nera should fill slimes, nature, and material first. Her Spirit covers MP, defense, revive, and status, so you can run a greedier attacker.

If the personality quiz hands you a starter outside that plan, keep it as flex and scout the missing families on purpose. How to scout is the mechanic; this page is the shopping list.

What to keep from official reveals

Slime Balls (three flavors) are easy emotional traps. Keep one flavor if you love it. Do not keep three. Bamboo Badboy and Groovy Grouse are nature-family samples — excellent on Nera, still worth one slot on Bianca for synthesis coverage. Platypup is a published newcomer with a rock-crushing bill; treat it as a small attacker candidate until full-game stats exist.

Nintendo Life’s Piña Marauder is a joke with teeth. If it shows up in your demo, it is a legal flex. Do not rebuild the team around a pineapple unless the talents actually support a job.

Mud mannequin and jumping jackal are not “early gods.” They are Square Enix’s published synthesis example (escudogre / well wisher). If you see them, they are kitchen stock for the recipe list, not automatic captains.

Size rule for the first week

Zero or one large monster on the field. Two L-ranks means two bodies, which punishes scouting and leaves no room for a wipe. Large monsters can wait until extra actions matter more than extra scouts. The families page explains the slot tax in more detail.

Demo transfer filter

Before you close the demo, run this filter on all eight names:

  • Is this the only member of its family I own?
  • Is this a special-synthesis child I do not want to breed again?
  • Does this monster have a job on the front line, or is it a second shrimp-tempura slime?

If the answer is “I just like it,” that is allowed — one slot. Seven slots of vibes is how you enter December with a depot of level-1 duplicates.

Pair this page with Getting Started for the first hour and battle system so Auto Battle does not spend your scout turns. After launch, this list will split into story route and Gauntlet route. Until then, jobs beat ranks.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before you scout your first monster.

What is the safest early formation?

Three small monsters plus one flex, covering attack, a second damage type, and sustain. Add a large monster only after scouting feels easy.

Should I keep all three Slime Ball flavors?

Keep one. The other two are collection goals, not three jobs. Synthesis and the depot exist for the extras after launch.

Does the starter from the quiz matter?

It is one of eight slots. Reroll if you hate it. Otherwise treat it as flex and scout your wrangler's missing families on purpose.
