Wrangler’s Gauntlet is the extra battle mode Square Enix put on stage in the Monster Wrangler trailer (State of Play, September 3, 2026). It is not the story dungeon. It is not Monster Marathons. It is a string of fights against other monster teams, scored in Points, with a shop that sells eggs.
The full game still launches December 3, 2026. The demo that opened September 9 covers Witherwood’s opening chapter. Gauntlet is a full-game extra; treat this page as a briefing, not a drop table.
What Square Enix and the trailer actually said
PlayStation’s trailer copy and Nintendo Life’s write-up use the same pitch: battle to your heart’s content in the brand-new Wrangler’s Gauntlet. Every attempt brings new thrilling battles. The goal is to become the ultimate monster wrangler.
GamingBolt’s September 3 recap adds the loop that the trailer only flashes:
- You take on other teams of monsters in consecutive battles.
- You earn Points.
- You spend Points at the Gauntlet Goods Shop.
- The shop sells Eggs, including different ranks of Slime Family Eggs and a Dragon Family Egg.
If you have played a mainline Dragon Quest Coliseum, that is the cousin. If you have not, think of a scored fight card you can rerun, not a single story boss.
The trailer that shows the mode is the same Monster Wrangler clip already embedded on Getting Started. This page uses the PlayStation release-date trailer in the middle so you can see the party language Square Enix wants you to bring into extra fights, without duplicating that State of Play ID.
How it sits next to the rest of the game
Gauntlet does not replace scouting. Eggs are a shop prize, not a Show of Force. It does not replace synthesis. An egg still has to become a monster you raise to level 10 if you want it as a parent.
It does sit next to battle system rules: four on the field, four on the bench, one Wrangler’s Spirit per fight. Large monsters still cost two slots. Auto Battle will still skip your brain. If a Gauntlet modifier exists, Square Enix has not published the list. Play the first card by hand.
Online PvP, online co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer are Steam flags for the whole game. Gauntlet, as described so far, is a consecutive-team challenge with a point shop. Do not assume it is ranked ladder until Square Enix says so. Do not assume it is local-only either.
What to bring
- A wrangler you can actually command. Bianca’s attack timeout and Nera’s revive timeout both matter when fights chain.
- Family coverage from the early party page. A slime-only card will bounce off the first dragon-shaped problem.
- Eggs you actually want. A Dragon Family Egg is a scouting shortcut, not an X-rank adult. Rank still has to be grown, and the demo’s G/F ceiling does not apply inside a December shop.
- Patience on Points. Consecutive fights punish a party that only works for one match.
What not to confuse it with
- Monster Marathons — a side-scrolling expedition minigame in the day-one DLC. Run and jump. Not a Gauntlet card.
- Mega Mole Hole — a dungeon that respawns monsters you already befriended. Farming parents, not Points.
- Scout Run — a field scouting extra. The VIP Card buffs snacks and wait times. It does not sell dragon eggs.
- Story meteocite fights — those restore Witherwood. Gauntlet is the gym you enter on purpose.
Prep before December 3
Play the demo so you know whether you like commanding a party. Keep eight monsters that cover jobs, not flavors. Read editions if you want Deluxe early access on December 1. Then come back here when Square Enix publishes the actual Point costs. Until that list exists, the shop is a reason to build a party that can survive a chain, not a reason to pre-purchase a fourth DLC pack.
