Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World Families, Ranks, and Sizes
The skeleton of the 500+ roster, before anyone owns an X-rank.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World splits its 500-plus roster into eight families. Square Enix named slimes and dragons in the July 2026 briefing and, through wrangler kits, implied beasts, undead, nature, and material as well. The remaining families follow series tradition; this page will name them as official lists land. Until then, play by the six we can already use.
The families that already change decisions
- Slimes — Nera scouts these more easily. Slime Balls (sour plum, veggie mix, shrimp tempura) are the headline newcomers. Fine as a staple or a joke, terrible as all four field slots.
- Dragons — Bianca scouts these more easily. They are the “I waited for a Dragon Quest Monsters game” family. Early ranks will still be G/F in the demo.
- Beasts — Bianca again. Jumping jackal sits here in Square Enix’s synthesis example.
- Undead — Bianca. Coffin-adjacent followers showed up in Nintendo Life’s overworld description; do not assume they are automatic evil-tier.
- Nature — Nera. Bamboo Badboy and Groovy Grouse live here. Vegetable plains and always-rain swamps are where you farm them.
- Material — Nera. Mud mannequin is the published example, and it cooks into escudogre with a beast parent.
Two more families exist in the “eight families” count. When Square Enix names them in English, they will be added here instead of guessed from Dark Prince muscle memory.
Ranks G through X
Nine ranks. G is the floor. X is the ceiling. The demo only befriends G and F. That is not a punishment; it is a breeding farm. Plus Value synthesis can emit a child of a higher rank than its parents — mud mannequin G plus jumping jackal E into well wisher D is the official picture.
Do not trash G-ranks that finish talents. They are compost. Do trash G-ranks that are the fifth slime with no talent investment.
Special synthesis (starry icon) can ignore “I never saw it in the grass” logic. Mitey Oak and Balhib are published proof. Keep recipes open when a family feels empty.
Size S vs L
Small monsters take one slot. Large monsters take two, gain extra traits, and can act more than once. Square Enix was clear: you may take any monster exploring, regardless of type or size. The tax is in battle and in scout math, not on the overworld leash.
A party of two L-ranks is two bodies. Show of Force likes bodies. Early party therefore starts with S-rank density and adds L when extra actions matter more than extra scouts.
Personalities sit on top of family and size. They steer growth. Two Platypups are not the same parent if one rolled a personality that funds the talent you want.
Biomes and clocks
Gematsu’s world feature: sun-drenched plains into a swamp that never stops raining, tropical beaches, vegetable fields, sunken ships. Day and night change spawns and behavior. If a family is missing, change time before you spend meat. Restored Roots of Creation are how you Zoom to the right biome instead of hiking it.
Aura enemies are not a family. They are a field warning. Scout them later with a full bench and a nearby root.
How to use this page with the rest of the wiki
- Pick a wrangler on Bianca vs Nera so three of the eight families are easier.
- Fill jobs on early party.
- Turn extras into children with synthesis.
- Re-scout missing parents in Mega Mole Hole after launch if you already befriended them once.
Families are the meta that exists before launch. Ranks are the meta that exists after Plus Value. Do not mix them up in September.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers before you scout your first monster.
How many families are in the game?
Eight. Square Enix confirmed the count. This page names the six tied to wrangler kits and official examples; the last two will be added when English materials list them.
What is the highest rank?
X, with G at the bottom. The demo only befriends G and F. Higher ranks come from the full game and from Plus Value synthesis.
Can I take a large monster into the overworld?
Yes. Square Enix says any type or size can follow you. The two-slot cost only hits the battle party.
