Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World How to Synthesize Monsters
Parents vanish. Children inherit. Plus Value is the long climb.
Synthesis is the kitchen of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World. Two monsters you raised become a child. The parents are gone. That sentence should sit in your head before you mash confirm on a favorite slime.
Square Enix’s July 2026 combat and synthesis briefing, plus hands-on notes from Nintendo Life, DualShockers, and PAX West, is enough to play the system without fanfiction. This page is the rules. The recipe list is the cookbook.
Unlock and the menu
A monster must reach level 10 before it can be a parent. You combine two parents. The child is usually from the same family as one of them. The menu shows possible children before you lock in — Nintendo Life confirmed you pick the outcome instead of rolling a surprise. That is a gift. Use it.
Children inherit talents. If a parent maxed a talent, the child may evolve that talent on inheritance. You can invest talent points into as many as three talents per monster, so the parents you feed the kitchen should be finished products, not half-trained extras.
Synthesis happens at restored Roots of Creation once you have the Waterwing Can. DualShockers compared those roots to a bonfire: heal, fast travel, depot, and fuse. Do not wander back to town for a machine that lives on the field.
Plus Value
Repeated synthesis builds Plus Value on the bloodline. A high Plus Value can bonus the child’s base attributes. It can also produce a monster of a higher rank than either parent. Square Enix’s example: a rank G mud mannequin plus a rank E jumping jackal can yield a rank D well wisher. Watch for a plus symbol on a result when a parent already carries a large Plus Value — that icon is the hint that rank-up is on the table.
This is why deleting two random G-ranks in the demo is usually a lesson, not a plan. Demo transfers reset level and talents. Plus Value work belongs in the full game unless you are specifically keeping a unique child species.
Special synthesis
Some children never appear as wild scouts. A starry icon marks special synthesis. Official examples:
- Stump Chump + Bad Egg = Mitey Oak
- Magmalice + Firn Fiend as grandparents, Golem + Coralossus as the other grandparents, then pick parents from those offspring to make Balhib
- Mud mannequin (material) + jumping jackal (beast) can make an escudogre (material)
Four-monster patterns mean you are breeding grandparents, not just a pair. Keep extras in the depot. The Mega Mole Hole DLC exists partly so you can re-scout a parent you already befriended instead of praying the overworld spawns it at night in a swamp.
Nintendo Life’s hands-on example fused a Bantamweight with a Bunicorn into a Bullfinch. That is not a published special recipe; it is a reminder that family pairing still produces named results you can preview in the menu. If the list looks bad, walk away. Parents are not a refund.
Practical kitchen rules
- Finish talents on parents you care about. Inheritance is the point.
- Keep one breeding pair in reserve so a bad child does not empty a family.
- Use how to scout to replace the parents you just deleted.
- Large children still cost two slots. Do not Plus-Value an L-rank into a party that cannot feed it MP.
- Rank-up via Plus Value is how you beat the demo’s G/F ceiling after launch, not before.
Synthesis is also why the tier list on this wiki is labeled as early and preliminary. A rank G parent is not junk; it is compost. The early party page tells you which compost is worth watering first.
The video in the middle of this page walks the same Square Enix briefing: party size, Wrangler’s Spirit, sizes, personalities, Plus Value, and the new monsters. Watch it once after you have a level 10 pair, not before you understand scouting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers before you scout your first monster.
When can I synthesize?
After a monster hits level 10, at a restored Root of Creation once you have the Waterwing Can. Both parents are consumed.
Can I see the child before I confirm?
Yes. The menu lists possible offspring. Pick one. There is no surprise roll on the standard path.
How do I get monsters that cannot be scouted?
Special synthesis, marked with a starry icon. Some patterns need four monsters across two generations. Start with the recipe list.
